Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that Dubai will roll out electric vehicles (EVs) equipped with sensors and cameras by 2023 in order to create digital maps for driverless taxis.
RTA and Cruise have reached an agreement under which the Cruise autonomous vehicles will provide taxi and e-Hail services in Dubai in accordance with Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council.
Deputy Director General, Chairman of RTA’s Board of Executive Directors, Mattar Al Tayer said, “Preparing digital maps is an essential part of the process of operating self-driving Cruise Origin vehicles that will be deployed next year in limited numbers to provide taxi and eHail services.
Up to 4,000 vehicles will be deployed by 2030.” We plan to increase the number of deployed vehicles gradually.
